Howlin’ Wolf Blues Festival

For Immediate Release-The Prairie Belt Blues Foundation of West Point, MS has announced the lineup for the upcoming 19th Annual Howlin’ Wolf Blues Festival to be held on the Friday night of Labor Day weekend, August 29th 2014 at the historic Mary Holmes Auditorium in West Point.

Honoring the “Legends of the Black Prairie Blues” this year will be Mr. Sipp~ The Mississippi Blues Child. Mr. Sipp is the 2014 winner of the IBC Best Blues Band competition in Memphis. They beat 170+ bands to win the coveted title. Lightnin’ Malcolm and Stud will be representing the hill country blues of north Mississippi and Malcolm is just back from his whirlwind tour with the North Mississippi Allstars opening for Legendary Robert Plant.

The two headliners are Carolyn Wonderland, bringing her smokin’ hot Texas Blues to the stage this year as she was recently featured on Austin City Limits. Carolyn is a triple threat artist with her vocals, stinging Texas Guitar licks and tight backup band, Closing the show will be George Porter Jr. (Funky Meters) and Runnin’ Pardners. George has shared the stage with Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, the Rolling Stones, Patti Labelle, Widespread Panic and countless others.

“He’s bringing the blues influenced New Orleans Funk to the Wolf stage. It’s the hottest lineup we’ve had in 19 years”, states Richard Ramsey, Vice President of the PBBF. Tickets, posters and t-shirts are on sale now and with this being an indoor event, seating is limited so get your tickets now.

In 1967, at The Flamingo Hotel, Las Vegas. Florence was sent home during this gig and Cindy Birdsong, who had been secretly rehearsing with Diana & Mary, stepped in. Florence would never return to the stage as a Supreme.

Three years later the group would record their final performance on January 14, 1970 at The Frontier Hotel. “Farewell,” a double-lp, is the rare Motown live album that is great from start to finish. Listening to it, it’s hard to believe they were barely speaking to each other at this point.

Last night Billboard awards there was no African American Males singers performing onstage, with the exception of The Late Great Michael Jackson, whom appeared via Hologram and seems to water down, and fully perished his already, tainted legacy. If Mr. Dick Clark was alive the Billboard awards would be totally different, Clark fought for decades  for Black performers to perform on The American Music awards and the Billboard awards, especially Black males, why after his death, the practice stopped?

The Rolling Stones have announced that they will play 14 shows across Europe in May, June and July as part of their 14 ON FIRE tour.

The Rolling Stones – 14 ON FIRE tour sees Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood back out on the road again after a mammoth run of concerts in the UK and US last year, bringing their iconic music and groundbreaking stage shows to audiences around the globe. The shows are a mix of festivals, stadiums and arenas.

FlorenceandcindyIn the summer of 1975, Mary Wilson worked a little magic and pulled Florence Ballard on stage as a Supreme for one last time! The Supremes (Wilson, Cindy Birdsong, who had replaced Florence in 1967, and Scherrie Payne, who had replaced Jean Terrell, who had replaced Diana Ross) were performing at Magic Mountain, an amusement park located just north of Los Angeles, and Ballard was th…ere visiting.
Florence had fallen on hard times financially, and had struggled with physical and emotional problems since being fired from The Supremes in 1967. 1975 was a particularly rough year, and Wilson, distressed over her old singing partner’s present condition, invited Flo to spend the summer with her family in California.
There are stories of fans seeing Ballard walking backstage and through the crowds looking rather rough and tough for wear, but, to me, these photos suggest otherwise. The visit with Wilson had its up and downs, but for one shining, magical moment, Florence Ballard held supreme with the group she named and helped found for the first time in eight years. And she did it with the nice lady who replaced her in the group, Cindy Birdsong, the Good Supreme!
“Ladies and gentlemen, I have a surprise guest …. Miss Florence Ballard!” Wilson intoned to an audience of over 2,000. The crowd went berserk and rushed the stage with cameras and cries of “Flo, we love you.” Florence was met with a thunderous ovation with love flooding the headlights. She didn’t sing a note!
All she did was beat a tambourine and dance around the stage, but that was good enough! There are varying stories of Ballard having stopped listening to the classic songs that helped to make her famous, and the word is during the classic group hits-medley that night, Ballard excused herself from the arena only to return when it was over.
Apparently, Wilson had no problem coaxing her onstage for the rousing finale, a rendition of the O’Jays hit, Love Train. And in what must have been a glorious moment for everyone, there were tears in the eyes of those who watched the beleagured Ballard come full circle, and take her rightful place right alongside Cindy Birdsong for just one more magical moment.

Diana Ross: The Boss!

Diana is a 1980 album by American R&B and soul singer Diana Ross, released by Motown. Her 11th studio album, was, and remains, the biggest-selling studio collection of Ross’ career. All songs are composed, played and produced by Chic member…s Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.
Conception Following the U.S. success of 1979’s The Boss, Ross wanted a fresher, more modern sound. Having heard production team Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of Chic’s work in the famous Manhattan disco club, Studio 54, Ross approached the two about creating a new album of material for her that stated where she felt she was in her life and career at the time. Initially, Ross was not pleased with the album’s results. Following a preview of the record to be released in the aftermath of the anti-disco backlash, Frankie Crocker, an influential New York City disc jockey warned Ross that releasing the album in its original state would even lead to the end of her career.
Ross remixed the entire album, assisted by Motown engineer Russ Terrana, removing extended instrumental passages and speeding up the tracks’ tempos. The new mix also put Ross’ vocals front and center. The remixing of the master tapes and the re-recording of all Ross’ lead vocals were performed without the knowledge or approval of Rodgers and Edwards. When they were presented with the “official” version of Diana, the producers publicly objected and, at one point, even considered removing their names from the album’s list of credits. Motown and Ross persisted and the version released was Terrana’s smoother, more commercial mix of the album.
Rodgers and Edwards were contracted by Motown to produce a follow-up album, but, as Ross left the label, it was never created. Rodgers and Edwards sued Motown, unsuccessfully claiming that they were owed monies for creating & recording the original version of the album. In 1989, Rodgers and Ross collaborated on Workin’ Overtime(#3 US R&B), released upon Ross’ return to Motown. Edwards produced the 1984 single, “Telephone(#13 US R&B)”, from Ross’ “Swept Away” album, released the RCA record label.
Released in May 1980, the Diana album introduced Ross to a new generation of fans worldwide. Reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart and number one on the Billboard Soul Albums Chart for 8 weeks, as well as yielding two top ten singles including the number-one single “Upside Down”, the album would sell over six million copies in the United States and be certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. In the UK it went Gold and spun off three successful singles; “Upside Down” (#2), “My Old Piano” (#5) and “I’m Coming Out” (#13). A fourth single, “Tenderness”, was also released in certain territories, reaching the top 40 in the Netherlands, and was later included on several greatest hits compilations. Some thirty years after its release diana remains Ross’ best-selling studio album to date having sold a total of over ten million copies worldwide.
Diana was one of four albums written and produced by Edwards and Rodgers in 1980, the other three being Sister Sledge’s Love Somebody Today, Sheila and B. Devotion’s King of the World including European hit single “Spacer”, and Chic’s fourth studio album Real People. Following the release of two more singles, the duet “Endless Love” with Lionel Richie and “It’s My Turn”, both worldwide hits, Ross left Motown and signed a then-record breaking $20 million recording deal with RCA Records. The first album for the label was 1981’s self-produced Why Do Fools Fall in Love, which went platinum and spawned two Top 10 hits in the US. Diana was remastered and released as a double CD in 2003 containing the original unremixed versions, together with a selection of other Motown dance tracks from the same period.

Some of the venues on the Chitlin’ Circuit were the Cotton Club  and Apollo Theaters in New York City, Regal Theatre in Chicago, Howard  Theatre in Washington, D.C., Fox Theater in Detroit and the Uptown  Theatre in Philadelphia, and a bunch of 1 night stand places in the  middle. A lot of these acts played Idlewild to incorporate some  relaxation along with work. Many of these fabulously talented artists started on the  chitlin’ circuit, including Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Ella  Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Dorothy  Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr., Ray Charles, .

The Supremes, Moms Mabley, Ike and Tina Turner ,George Benson, B.B. King, Richard Pryor, Muddy Waters, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Redd Foxx, Patti LaBelle, Jimi Hendrix, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The  Temptations, John Lee Hooker, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, The Isley  Brothers, and The Four Tops.

( The dancers were love with Otis) And a Motortown Revue Dancer named Donna Dixon….I met Donna on the phone as she called into me for tech support a few years ago. It was just before the holidays and we struck up a long conversation as I fixed her computer problems. Donna was a backup dancer for the Funk Brother’s band.

They were the massively talented studio musicians that created the “Motown Sound” See a bit of their movie:Standing in the Shadows of Motown The touring company of acts from Motown were called the Motor Town Revue.

Idlewild became known as the “Black Eden of Michigan”. As this new black intelligentsia began to settle in the community, some relocated as activists and members of Marcus Mosiah Garvey‘s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), some as followers of Du Bois’ National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), others as believers of the late Booker T. Washington‘s political machine, and others as potential investors. For the majority of these professionals who brought their families, the idea of land ownership conveyed black social status and membership in this community.

Idlewild gained national stature among African Americans during the period between the World Wars. For example, the Idlewild Land Owners Association had members from over thirty-four states in the country. In addition, the Purple Palace, Paradise Clubhouse, Idlewild Clubhouse, Rosanna Tavern, and Pearl’s Bar provided summer entertainment for tourists and employment opportunities for seasonal and year-round residents in the community. The Pere Marquette Railroad built a branch line to the area by 1923. A post office opened that same year. The Idlewild Fire Department was established, and a host of new entrepreneurs began entering the community. Paradise Palace became McKnight’s Convalescent Home.

Following World War II, Idlewild attracted what some sociologists have labeled the new African American “working” middle class. With the construction of a few paved roads in Idlewild, a reinvestment in the township’s only post office, and greater availability of electricity, a new generation of entrepreneurs began to invest in Idlewild. Phil Giles, Arthur “Big Daddy” Braggs, and a host of other African American businessmen and women took advantage of the market by purchasing property on Williams Island and Paradise Gardens, and began developing these areas into an elaborate nightspot and business center. The cottage started by Albert Cleage in the 1940s was expanded by his sons Louis, Hugh, and Henry.

Many African American entertainers of the period performed in Idlewild. Della Reese, Al Hibbler, Bill Doggett, Jackie Wilson, T-Bone Walker, George Kirby, The Four Tops, Roy Hamilton, Brook Benton, Choker Campbell, Lottie “the Body” Graves, the Rhythm Kings, Sarah Vaughan, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Fats Waller, and Billy Eckstein, and many other performers, entertained both Idlewilders and white citizens in neighboring Lake County townships throughout the 1950s and early 1960s.

Arthur Braggs produced singers, dancers, showgirls, and entertainers, which helped Idlewild to become the “Summer Apollo of Michigan”. Braggs produced the famous “Arthur Braggs Idlewild Revue” which not only performed in Idlewild but was also taken on the road to Montreal, Boston, Kansas City, Chicago, New York, and other cities. Braggs’ show helped Idlewild become a major entertainment center and contributed to the financial prosperity of the area

Donna told me all the gossip “on the road”with the famous groups.She also sadly told me then how Levi Stubbs had just had a large stroke and was wheel chair bound. He would never perform again. Donna suggested I read a book that mentioned her and Donna’s picture is in it twice! The book was written by Dr. Ronald J Stephens an acclaimed expert on African American History at several large universities. It was a fascinating hour long conversation with a woman thathas lived a fascinating life in Detroit. She is still as as sparkling as her costumes were back then

The remaining members of TLC, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas, are “proud” of their biopic Crazy, Sexy, Cool: The TLC Story, which premieres tonight on Vh1.

The two-hour movie stars KeKe Palmer as Chilli, Drew Sidora as T-Boz, and Lil Mama as Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and chronicles the trio’s rise to fame, financial struggles, and their drama-filled love lives.

“Being that we were a part of it, we weren’t going to just let them [VH1] do whatever they wanted, and take over our lives,” T-Boz, who executive produced the film with Chilli, said during an interview with theGrio.

“We did want more stories in there,” she confessed. “It could have been like The Jacksons, like every night during the week,” Chilli added.

The Temptations was like that. There were so many stories that we couldn’t tell. The hardest part was narrowing down, being able to tell the complete story and add the right scenes to tell that story.”

As for what they think the late Left Eye would think of this film, the pair said, “she would love it.”

“Lisa would be so proud of this. She would be sitting here like, ‘yeah we did that.’”

TLC, one of the best-selling female groups of all time, undoubtedly paved a way for other R&B girl groups of the ’90s, like Destiny’s Child, to follow.

The “No Scrubs” singers recalled a recent moment when Beyoncé personally thanked them for letting Destiny’s Child open for TLC during their world tour.

“We were backstage [before a 2011 performance on American Idol] and she [Beyoncé] walked up to us and was thanking us, and we had never heard that from her before and it was really nice,” Chilli said.

“Her exact words were: ‘Thank you so much, those were some of the best times of my life,” T-Boz added. “Thank you for letting us open up for y’all because that was the best time… one of the best times of my life.’”
