Valerie june: Sunday Best

Born in Jackson, Tennessee, June was the oldest girl of five children. As a child growing up in Humboldt, June was exposed to gospel music at her local church and R&B and soul music via her father. As a teenager, her first job was with her father – a promoter for gospel singers and Prince, K-Ci & JoJo, and Bobby Womack – helping him hang posters in town.

June relocated to Memphis in 2000 and began recording and performing at the age of 19, initially with her then-husband in the duo Bella Sun.After her marriage ended she began working as a solo artist, combining blues, gospel and Appalachian folk, in a style that she describes as “organic moonshine roots music”, and learning guitar, banjo, and lap-steel guitar.[2][3] She became associated with the Memphis-based Broken String Collective.[6][8]

In 2009 she was a featured artist on MTV’s online series $5 Cover (following the lives of Memphis musicians attempting to make ends meet),[2][3][9][10][11] and in 2010 she recorded the EP Valerie June and the Tennessee Express, a collaboration with The Old Crow Medicine Show.

In 2011 she was honored by the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission at the Emissaries of Memphis Music event. She raised funds to record an album with producer Craig Street via, raising $15,000 in 60 days.[[ Later that year she relocated from Memphis to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Shortly after, record producer Kevin Augunas introduced June to Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, which led to the recording of June’s album Pushin’ Against a Stone in July 2011, which was co-written and produced by Dan Auerbach and Kevin Augunas.

In 2012, June performed with producer John Forté on a collaboration called Water Suites (on the hip-hop-blues song “Give Me Water”), and with Meshell Ndegeocello on the song “Be My Husband”. She contributed the The Wandering’s 2012 album Go on Now, You Can’t Stay Here: Mississippi Folk Music Volume III.In 2012 she performed in the United Kingdom for the first time, playing at Bestival and appearing on Later… with Jools Holland.[2][17]

She has received substantial radio play in Europe on BBC Radio 6, including a feature on Cerys on 6 with Cerys Matthews. Mary Anne Hobbs of XFM has said of June “This woman has already touched my heart, she really, really has.”

In February 2013, June was invited to support Jake Bugg on the UK leg of his tour. In March 2013, June performed two nights at South By Southwest. The first performance was on March 14 as part of the Heartbreaker Banquet. On March 16, June performed again, this time as part of The Revival Tour.

After self-releasing three albums, her debut album as a signed artist, Pushin’ Against a Stone, is due for release in the UK and Europe through Sunday Best Recordings on May 6, 2013, and through Concord Music Group in August, 2013.  The album includes several songs co-written with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, who co-produced it with Kevin Augunas The album was so titled to commemorate the story of her life. June said “I feel I’ve spent my life pushing against a stone.

And the jobs I’ve had have been fitting for getting a true feel for how the traditional artists I loved came home after a hard day to sit on the porch and play tunes until bedtime.”[24] The record includes performances by Booker T. Jones, who co-wrote one of the songs contained on the album. The track “Workin’ Woman Blues” was produced and engineered by Peter Sabák in Budapest.

The two singles released in the UK and Europe were “Workin’ Woman Blues” and “You Can’t Be Told

Lil Snupe: Final Resting Place

Hundreds packed the Jonesboro-Hodge High School auditorium Saturday to pay their final respects to slain rapper Lil’ Snupe.

The service was initially scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. but was pushed to 1 p.m. late in the week because of the family’s request.

Lil’ Snupe, whose real name is Addarren Ross, 18, was shot and killed June 20 in Winnfield. Police responded to a shots fired call in the Maplewood Apartments at 1901 S. Jones St. and found Ross with two bullet wounds to the torso. Paramedics responded, but Winn Parish coroner investigators pronounced Ross dead on the scene.

Mourners began to arrive three hours before the service, and rapper Meek Mill entered shortly prior to the service beginning

Clearly still shaken up, Mill sat dejected in the third row with dark sunglasses over his eyes for the majority of the service.

“I’m never one to talk (at funerals),” Mill said when presented with a resolution from Jonesboro Mayor Leslie Thompson. “I saw something in him. His demo tape spoke to me. I saw myself in him.”

Perhaps the most emotional part of the service was when a letter was read from Ross’ biological father who is incarcerated.

It’s surprising how in such a short period of time, a rapper who was 18 for seven days and is from a town of fewer than 5,000 people could have an impact on such a wide group of people.

After news of Lil’ Snupe’s death, hip-hop legends sent Twitter into a frenzy. Celebrity fans took to the site to pay their respects.

“RIP @LilSnupe. Prayers to his family. Some of the saddest news you ever hear…rise up and be leaders for the future. Lives depend on it,” hip-hop mogul Diddy tweeted.

“This Is Crazy He Was A Talented Kid! May He RIP #LilSnupe,” rapper Trina tweeted.

Although Lil’ Snupe had made it to the top, he never forgot where he came from or the “little people.”

Grambling State senior Peter Dorsey has been an MC in North Louisiana for the past five years and reminisces on the time Lil’ Snupe spent “grinding” to make it to the top on campus.

“After putting him in a (rap) battle, he had every student on the campus captivated in less than two minutes,” Dorsey said. “Every time we saw each other, he said, ‘Keep grinding.’”

“He came from nothing,” Charlie Brown wrote. “He taught the young to never make excuses. When the doors open for me, the world will forever hear Lil’ Snupe!”

Ross, who is originally from Jonesboro, was signed to Mill’s DreamChasers record label hours after meeting him after Grambling State University’s homecoming concert in October.

“He was in a van, and I knocked on the window,” Ross said in a February interview with MTV. “They let the window down, grabbed the mix tape, and about 10 minutes or 20 minutes later, they called me.”

The moment Mill heard the struggle in Lil’ Snupe’s lyrics, he noticed somebody who reminded him of him.

“He was spitting so much pain,” Mill said of his protégé. “He’s from the South with a flow like an East Coast guy. He really can spit, and he was talking that talk that I can really relate to. I seen potential in him.”

Emeli Sande: Record Breaker

Emeli Sande is celebrating after her debut album Our Version Of Events toppled the Beatles’ record of spending the most consecutive weeks in the UK top 10.

The 26-year-old Scottish star’s album hasn’t dropped out of the top 10 since its release in February 2012, staying in the UK’s album chart for 63 weeks, and is the biggest selling album of that year, the Official Charts Company has revealed.

“This record is so significant to me for many different reasons. I’m so happy and I’m thankful to you all. We made history!!” she tweeted.

She added: “I’m completely lost for words and this is something I could only have dreamed of. The Beatles are the greatest band of all time and their legacy lives on and continues to inspire all of us that make music.

“I’m so happy that so many people have connected with the stories and the songs on the record, this really is our version of events now.”

She has now overtaken The Beatles, who previously held the record for almost 50 years with Please Please Me, which spent 62 weeks inside the top 10 between its release in 1963 and 1964.

Our Version Of Events, which features hits such as Next To Me, Heaven and Clown, has sold 1.82 million copies in the UK.

The double Brit winner’s chart-topping hit Next To Me was also the third most played pop song of 2012, according to UK music licensing company PPL.

DERRAN DAY: Natural Talent

derran daySinger, Songwriter, Performer

A natural talent at 23, Derran is a stand-out singer/songwriter who plays the piano and masters his own originals. Derran attended Berklee School of Music in Boston and is part of a well-known musical family.

His father, Morris Day (Morris Day & The Time, Purple Rain), and his mother Judi Jones Day (original member of The Soul Train Gang, background vocalist for a variety of groups such as Earth, Wind & Fire and Lou Rawls), were positive influences, who encouraged his passion for singing and helped nurture his ambition as a songwriter.

Creating a MySpace page at age 17, he wrote and recorded his first song, “It’s Nothing,” which was followed by a series of songs that displayed his diverse range and depth as an R&B/Pop artist.

Knowing its equally important to be a positive role model, Derran became a Musicfuel Mentor.  His way of mentoring through patience and method teaching, which he learned at Berklee has been very valuable to the Musicfuel programs.  We’re excited to have Derran as part of our team and look forward to all of his contributions and performances that capture the Musicfuel spirit.
