Lady Gaga: Round Of Applause!

lady-gaga-v-magazine-issue-61-coverWhen Lady Gaga rolled up to Micky’s nightclub on Monday night to film her“Applause” lyric video, none of the night’s performers had any idea that Gaga would be one of the revelers in the crowd.
“It was very last minute, spur of the moment. We knew nothing about it. It was a very spur of the moment thing,” Shannel, who is featured in the video, told MTV News about the shoot, which took place at the West Hollywood gay club on a night when she and several other drag queens were slated to take the stage.

“Everybody [in the crowd] was really well behaved [when it was all happening]; it wasn’t quite chaotic as I would have expected it to have been,” Shannel continued. “She just sat there in the crowd, just as a regular spectator, and then it just became a lot more interactive [when she came on stage and] that got the crowd really up and going. And then birthdays came around and she started singing to all the people onstage. It was great!”
While it was a controlled chaos, Shannel added that the crowd was pretty hyped to have Gaga, sporting a black outfit and her ARTPOP makeup, in the hotspot with them. “Madness! It was lots and lots of energy! And everybody screaming and yelling [at] more or less just the sheer fact that ‘I can’t believe that Lady Gaga is really here right now.’ We’re, as entertainers, we’re on stage and were having to be professional and we’re doing our numbers whether Lady Gaga is there or not.

“To the audiences’ perspective, it was this completely overwhelming thing that kind of came,” she continued. “It sealed the deal [when she jumped onstage]. Like ‘Whoa, she’s raised human’ and she doesn’t have to have a bodyguard on her every second of the moment, [she has] her own free will and spirit and all of that. It was pretty cool.”
During her two-plus hours at the club, Gaga didn’t just spend time with the drag queens on stage, but also backstage where she bonded with them. She included some of that in the video. “She went backstage and sat in my makeup area. And she was very cool and hang out and chill. It was very chill, like very easy going,” Shannel said.

Gaga is slated to premiere the actual music video for “Applause” on Monday during “Good Morning America,” but Shannel loves the guerilla-style, party-themed lyric video that fans can play on repeat until then. She said, “It’s great. I like it because it’s just very kick-back and very casual and very home video, like ‘Let’s just go and have a good time.’ “
“Applause” is the lead single off her November 11 album release, ARTPOP. Lady Gaga will perform “Applause” at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, airing live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on August 25.

Jay- Z and Obama: BFF?

jay-z-obamaCNN) – It’s no secret that Jay-Z is close with President Barack Obama. The hip hop artist held big fundraisers for the president, and his megastar wife, Beyoncé, performed at Obama’s second inauguration.

But Jay-Z said this week their friendship also plays out on the small screen–a very small screen. In an interview with New York radio station Hot97, the rapper confirmed that he and Obama exchange text messages.

“Yeah, I’ve spoken to him on the phone and had texts from Obama, of course,” he said Wednesday.

Jay-Z stopped himself and quickly expressed regret for saying “of course,” acknowledging the term may sound arrogant.

“Yes, that’s happened,” he continued, referring to the text messages.

The song writer and designer said Obama is “a regular guy” who uses a lot of sports analogies.

“I don’t know if this is like breaching national security, but he was like–when he was getting elected the second time–he was like ‘Hey, you know, fourth quarter, just give me the ball.’ I said ‘word’.”

That conversation, Jay-Z added, happened in Cleveland when he performed at a rally for Obama shortly before Election Day.

He further admitted he gets a little star struck around the president, a big admission for one of the most successful musical artists in the country.

Obama’s relationship with the power couple also made headlines this year when Jay-Z rapped that the White House–rather than the Treasury Department–gave them approval for their high-profile trip to Cuba.

In an unusual White House press briefing, Obama’s chief spokesman, Jay Carney, was asked about the lyrics.

But Carney sharply denied that the White House gave the couple clearance for their travel.

“I guess nothing rhymes with Treasury,” Carney said.

The bonds between the rapper and the president go back at least as far as the 2008 campaign, when candidate Obama said the way to handle political mudslinging was by brushing one’s shoulders off – mimicking Jay-Z’s trademark move. Jay-Z’s hits shuffle on Obama’s iPod, he said in July 2010 – alongside the likes of crooner Frank Sinatra and opera great Maria Callas. The couple also visited the White House earlier that year, and their VIP tour included a stop inside the Situation Room.

You’d think after the whole Cuba fiasco he’d have the sense to STOP bragging about his personal relationship with President Obama.
